It’s not because of the hard break on automobile circulation provoked by the pandemic that EDP will take its foot from the accelerator of electric mobility. On the contrary, EDP is assuming its commitment to continue to invest in this area and to reach the end of the year with 300 electric charging points as settled with strategic partners, revealed Vera Pinto Pereira, EDP Comercial’s Executive Director.
Two weeks ago, in the midst of the State of Emergency, EDP opened two new fast charging stations in Entroncamento and Venda do Pinheiro, in the context of a partnership with BP, which aims for a total of 30 fast charging points for this year, seven of which are already working. “It’s also a way of supporting the economy and returning to normality, but in a sustainable way”, states the CEO. Because, even if its’ true that the drastic decrease of circulation of people and goods had an unprecedented impact in CO2 emissions, putting a halt on the planet is not the solution. Therefore, the energetic transition and the electrification of economy and of transportation in particular, it’s now more than ever, a solution so that the Planet doesn’t collapse with the restarting of activities, underlines Vera Pinto Pereira.
EDP’s policy emerges in fact, aligned with the strategy of the European Commission, that set the goal of one million electric charging stations until 2025 in the European space, in the context of the Green Deal, followed by the company. It’s also in tune with other automobile industry giants such as VW, Daimler and BMW, that although facing a vertiginous decrease on sales in the last months, already publicly announced that they plan to keep their trajectory of converting their fleets to electric and that the goals set by the EU shouldn’t be put into question.
These are very strong signs from the industry, that underline the inevitability of this transition, even if some companies in the sector are lobbying to expand those goals in time, due to the pandemic. Signs also strengthened by the publication in April of the most complete study on the ecologic footprint of a vehicle, which demonstrates that, even in the worst case scenario, an electric car would save from 22% to 28% of CO2 emissions in comparison with diesel or gas alternatives.
An App that simulates savings for one’s pocket and for the environment
In order to help sensitize drivers about the advantages of electric mobility, EDP Comercial launched EVX, an app that allow drivers of combustion vehicles to simulate in their trips, the experience of an electric vehicle, in terms of consumption, emissions and autonomy.
Having already been used in more than 410 thousand trips, EVX allowed to conclude that users would have saved more than 315 thousands of Euros if they would have opted for an electric vehicle, and in 82% of the trips wouldn’t have needed charging, which is autonomy. For every trip, the average saving would be of 0,76€. In total, app users would have saved more than 290 tons of CO2 emissions for the environment.
The results of the first trimester of this year, in this matter, are encouraging, revealing an increase of demand on this type of mobility. EDP Comercial counted 17 thousand active CEME charing cards, an increase of 17% in comparison with the same period last year, associated with the consumption of energy coming from 100% renewable sources. And its giving its contribution with the electrification of its fleet, which already counts with 239 vehicles 100% electric and 44 hybrid, complying this way with half of the goals set for 2022.
Although there are a lot of questions regarding the real impact of the current pandemic in mobility and about what will be the “new normal”, everything points towards the emergence of more business models linked to sustainable mobility with an impact on the sustainability of cities, in the decrease of circulation and in the optimization of available resources.
For now, mobility is also made through digital platforms, everywhere around the world, and also EDP, with most of its workers smart-working “a model very much used in the company, and more and more regular, also because of its activity which is spread through 19 different places” refers a source from the national electric company.
