The eight winners that will represent Portugal in the 2020 edition of the World Summit Awards (WSA) are already selected. The WSA is an initiative that involves 180 countries and distinguishes the best digital solutions with social impact. EDP is among the finalists with two applications that support the adoption of electric mobility. These are the EDP EV.X app, that won in the category of Environment & Green Energy and the EDP EV.Charge – Solution for Apartment Complexes, that won in the category of Smart Settlements & Urbanization.
The iLoF app, a virtual database that provides biomarkers of several diseases (Health & WellBeing), LUGGit, a platform that allows travelers to request pick up and delivery of baggage service in real time (Culture & Tourism) or E Wearable Braille SOS a device created to support visually and hearing impaired communities to request help wherever they are (Inclusion & Empowerment) are some of the other selected technologies among the 44 candidates.
The award, that counts with the patronage of the United Nations, is promoted and organized by the Portuguese Association for the Development of Communications (APDC). The Portuguese projects were selected by a jury presided by Sandra Fazenda (APDC) and by the Ex-Minister for Education, Roberto Carneiro, together with other 16 members in the areas of social and business communication.
The eight national technologies will now compete with the finalists of 180 countries. By the end of the year, eight innovations will be selected at a world level for each category. The winners will be revealed by the end of the first semester of next year and presented at the WSA Global Congress.
“For EDP, this is a very important recognition of the path that we have been envisioning in the promotion of electric mobility in Portugal” stated a source in the company, underlining the competitive fares as well as solutions and products developed with the goal of facilitating the adoption of electric vehicles and its charging system inside and outside of home.
The EV.X app, which won in the category of Environment & Green Energy, was developed by EDP for Smartphones and it simulates the consumption profile of a driver if he/she would be using electric mobility. The users of this app already made more than 430 thousand trips, traveling over 8 million Km with an average of 19Km per trip.
Meaning that if these trips would have been made with electric vehicles, it would have saved 300 thousand euros and avoided 311 tons of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. More than 80% of these trips could have been made without the need of recharging the vehicles, demonstrating that autonomy is not always a barrier in the adoption of this kind of vehicle.
EV.Charge in its turn, won in the category of Smart Settlements & Urbanization and its EDP’s solution to created to charge electric vehicles in apartment complexes’ garages and other shared habitation communities. The app automatically pays to the apartment complex the energy used, through a virtual account – e-wallet – available at EDP’s app. With this option, the need to manually settle accounts at the end of the month is erased.
The platform, that according to the data made available by EDP, already made 1500 transactions, it also allows to optimize expenses of consumed energy by the electric vehicle, giving the option of scheduling charges in the most economical times at the apartment complexes, according to its fares. EV.Charge also integrates access to a portal that apartment complexes managers can see the charging stations’ consumption and manage fares and payments.
