In the A1 Northern Highway, the first two charging points – a fast and an ultra-fast one – are already working, thanks to a partnership between BP, Brisa and EDP Comercial, under the Via Verde Electric network. The chargers were installed in the service station of Santarém, in the North to South direction, a strategic point between the country’s two main cities, Lisbon and Porto. The chosen equipment is amongst the most modern and innovative in the market.
Now it’s easier, more comfortable and predictable for the users of electric mobility to travel long distances outside urban centres. With the ultra-fast charger of 150 kW, it’s possible to charge the equivalent of 100Km of autonomy in less than 10 minutes, significantly decreasing the waiting time.
This is BP’s and EDP Comercial’s first ultra-fast charger in Portugal. It’s also the first one in this highway, where in 2020 a daily average of 26 thousand cars passed through. A fast charger was also installed, of 50kW, which allows two vehicles to charge simultaneously in AC and DC.
By the end of the year, BP, Brisa and EDP Comercial hope to equip four more servisse stations with fast and ultra-fast chargers, in the A1 and A2 highways, securing this way more and better ways of electric charging in the north and in the south of the country, in two of its main road axis. All of the equipment is linked to the public network MOBI.E. Using the Cartão Mobilidade Elétrica EDP, company clients with an electricity contract will have 25% discount in charging until the end of June.
The spaces destined for electric mobility will be duly identified in the Colibri Service Stations, taking part in the Via Verde Electric network, the new network of fast and ultra-fast charging points that BRISA is implementing in its highways. This concept puts together the main players of the field in a collective effort for the evolution of public electric charging in Portugal and it means a fundamental step in the de-carbonization of the country. It’s through partnerships like this, that puts together companies of different sectors in a common goal, that will be possible to offer more charging options, in increasingly diferente and broad areas, an essential contribution for electric mobility.
The inauguration of these charging points is an important milestone in BP’s sustainability policy, that has been working in creating alternative energetic solutions and products with more efficient consumption, having in mind the reduction of carbon emissions. BP is constantly working to evolve in its goal of “re-imagining” energy for people and for the planet, as part of the #bpNetZero goal. Present in Portugal for over 92 years, BP is today na integrated energy company focused on solutions for clients and has as a commitment to become a company with zero liquid carbon emissions by 2050 or before, and to help the world to reach that same goal.
The Via Verde Electric network is Brisa’s answer to the need of speeding up the de-carbonization of road traffic, through the ease of electric mobility. By the end of 2021, with BP and EDP and the rest of Via Verde Electric’s partners, all of Brisa’s highways will be served by a total of 82 fast and ultra-fast charging stations (from 50kW to 350kW), installed in 40 service stations. By this summer, it will already be possible to go all the way from the north to the south of Portugal in an electric car, with complete safety and charging comfort.
Brisa has as a goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2045.
A leader in the choice of clients for charging in public spaces, EDP Comercial already issued more than 25 thousand cards to be used in the MOBI.E network, which were already used in more than 140 thousand charging, avoiding the emission of 1.200 tons of CO2. While na operator of charging stations, EDP Comercial was also the company that grew more in 2020.
For 2021, the company wants to have more than 1.000 charging stations throughout the country and to keep developing the best solutions also for private charging in homes, apartment complexes and companies.
